Baxter Springs Heritage Center and Museum

We've all heard of a one horse town.  This is a one horse mine/mill.

This probably wasn't around Cardin or Picher, but it's an example of a very crude mining/milling operation.  The horse is turning the water pump.  You can see the water pipe in the foreground being supported by the "X" brace.  This operation is very close to the method used by the early gold miners.  After all, ore is ore, and the method of recovery is similar for all ores.
